When in Doubt . . .

Here's a little online devotional guest blog I wrote on faithfulness awhile back. Enjoy!

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 3:3-6, 28:20 (and Luke 16:10 & Colossians 3:23-24)

“When in doubt, love and be faithful.” That’s what I keep telling myself these days.

Proverbs 3:3 says, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” A few chapters later, the wisdom of Proverbs calls living in love and faithfulness a safe place (20:28).

All through the Proverbs, faithfulness is a virtue highly esteemed. It's not only that faithfulness is something God desires to be evident in our lives, nor is it simply a lifestyle promised to yield a reward; but ultimately our faithfulness is a reflection of the character of God to the world around us. That, in itself is a high honor. In fact, 2 Timothy 2:13 reveals this about the character of God:

“if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”

All that to say, we can only be faithful to God, what He’s called us to, our families, friends, our jobs, and churches because He is faithful. He was faithful when we were faithless, faithful when we are full of faith, and He will be faithful when our faith and faithfulness yet again waver.

When we begin to catch a glimpse of the faithfulness of God, that’s really when true faithfulness can be manifest in our daily living. So my question to you is the very same question I ask myself: In the areas of your life that you struggle to be faithful, are you aware of God’s faithfulness to you in that very same area? If you struggle to daily read and glean from His Word, are you aware of His faithfulness in recording His thoughts for you and His faithfulness to daily await time alone with you? If you wrestle with having a good attitude at your job or with your family, are you aware of the faithfulness of God to provide you with your family or job along with everything else you need for life and godliness? In places our faithfulness wanes, that’s exactly the spot God desires to give us revelation of His faithfulness.

Back to the top. “When in doubt, love and be faithful.” It’s my mantra these days. In Jesus’ sermon on the mount, He was wise to say, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34,35). In essence, this is a call to be faithful to Him today, in the here and now. The tricky part about this call to faithfulness is that everything inside me wants to know what’s next, when things will change, and when something new will be just around the corner. Yet this worrying and trying to figure out tomorrow is perhaps the greatest enemy of our faithfulness in today. It's also the greatest counterfeit substitution of intimately knowing God’s faithfulness. For if we are worrying about tomorrow and trying to plan out all the details, how will there be room for the Faithful God to loyally tend to us in our weakness? Here we see the task of the faithful is to trust in Him with all our hearts, not leaning on our own understanding, acknowledging Him in every step along the way, and then so diligently live unto Him in what He’s called us to today. All the rest is up to Him. And when all the rest is up to Him, living in faithfulness is the most freeing place to be found.

So I’ll leave you with this encouragement intended to spur you on to be faithful today:

If you know nothing else of God’s will for you, love and be faithful. Receive the love of God and seek to recognize His faithfulness. Then in turn, love God and the one in front of you, and be faithful to what He’s put before you today. With these two things in place, along with a soft and submitted heart, you can have confidence you’re walking in the will of God. And if by some chance your feet begin to stray, you’re in the perfect place for the Good Shepherd to lovingly redirect your step. So press on in love and faithfulness, being assured that there is a great reward in store and keeping your eyes on the prize that is Jesus. Know that when tomorrow comes, He’ll surely unveil the rich reward for your faithfulness in today (Luke 16:10, Colossians 3:23,24, Proverbs 28:19-20). In any and all things done unto Him, He takes our faithfulness so very personally.

Always, Kaylee
